Why UTM Outbound Academic Visit?

Participating in the UTM Outbound Academic Visit is an exciting and challenging way of broadening your personal, academic and professional horizons. Through the program, you can:

  • Globalize your educational experience by adding an international dimension to your degree;
  • Enhance academic opportunities beyond those offered at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
  • Establish professional and career opportunities by networking with other students, academics and professional organizations;
  • Improve language skills, cross-cultural understanding, and cross-cultural and interpersonal communication
  • Experience personal growth by developing self confidence, independence, and social skills; and
  • Incorporate these new experiences into your resumé so that you stand out from the crowd in an ever increasingly global workforce.
How long is the programme?

In this programme, students spend 7 – 14 days to gain new academic, cultural and international experience. Minimum is 7 days including depart and return day.

Total academic programme  must not less then 3 days.

What is academic programme? Refer to Outbound Academic Visit with immersion concept information.  Programme must include at least one academic programme to partner university . Refer to List of partner universities

Outbound Academic Visit with Immersion Concept

Outbound Academic Visit program must consist or mixture of 9 elements of immersion as below:

  1. Service learning
  2. Field-based exercise, apply leading ideas in managerial practice
  3. Interaction with communities and business leaders
  4. Engage in short-term consulting projects for local organization
  5. Participate in field-based learning
  6. Participation in research and learning activities with host university
  7. Student participation in project competition or international events
  8. Corporate Social Responsibility
  9. Student participation in cultural activities and historical in country visited.
Am I eligible?

UTM students will be considered for UTM Outbound Academic Visit Programme provided that:

  • the applicant is currently a student of UTM
  • the applicant should possess a good academic record
  • the applicant must agree to enroll at the host institution as described in the programme plan
  • the applicant must agree to abide by the rules and regulations of the host institution or placement provider.
  • the applicant should demonstrate empathy and understanding of cultural difference
  • the applicant have good health condition
  • the applicant should demonstrate excellent personal skills.
  • the applicant agrees to be responsible for the costs incurred.  The students may seeks other sources of sponsors including that provided by UTM to subsidize some expenses including travel, accommodation and insurance expenses
  • Students are eligible for one (1) time funding only during the whole period of study
Before you apply
  • Think carefully. You should think about country of visit, your personal and academic goals, and what kind of the programme focus area is best for you.
  • Talk with your faculties and residential colleges. Part of the application is the approval of participation form, signed by Dean of your faculty and Principal of residential colleges.
  • Talk with your family and friends. Your family and friends know you best, and may be able to help you sort out priorities. It’s also important to make sure your family understands your programme, the location you’ve chosen, and the process the programme. You will need their support, and they will want to know about this exciting opportunity.
  • Think financially. UTM Outbound Academic Visit Programme is an important commitment, and financing the experience may not be as difficult as you think. Advance planning will help tremendously. UTM may offer financial assistance. Check with your faculty and residential colleges for more information.
The Application Process

Application for Program with or without Funding

Note: Programme which organised under Residential College must get application endorsed by students’ faculties.

After you apply

Review Process. The UTM Global Outreach Programme committee reviews complete applications in batches by programme.Next Step. Once you have been accepted, you will receive the following prior to your departure:

  • Visa instructions, if applicable.
  • Pre-departure materials.
  • A letter from your Programme Advisor outlining more specific information about the program.
  • A group list of other students, including email addresses, to help you make contact just prior to thUTM Global Outreach Programme is an international programme designed to develop UTM’s students to be global ready graduate.
The programme focus area
  • A technical-based, experiential approach that redefines the classroom as students learn from academics, policymakers, and other professionals in the real-world settings of communities, workplaces, organizations, and natural environments.
  • Genuine cultural immersion through cross discipline experience  and local assimilation that enables students to make connections that promote academic progress, personal growth, and intercultural understanding;
  • Service learning that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
Financial Support
There will be no funding given for Outbound Academic Visit Program for 2016 (Effective on 1st March 2016)
*Student (local/ international student) is COMPULSORY to apply for program approval from university through UTM International and going abroad approval from Student Affairs Office for any participation in International program in overseas
**There will be no fund for program which is fully sponsored by host program/ sponsored by host university/ institutions/ sponsored by any research grant which support mobility program/ sponsored by any funding from other institutions before program approval
