Workshop I

“Internationalisation, ranking and visibility”
PROF DR NORDIN YAHAYA
DIRECTOR, HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (AKEPT)
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MALAYSIA

Dr. Nordin is the Director for Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), at the Ministry of Education Malaysia since May 2019 where he is responsible to develop holistic higher education leaders who are competent and innovative through leadership advancement initiatives for national and international needs. Previously, he was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) where he was responsible for planning, strategising and executing the internationalisation policies and initiatives as well as global reputation at UTM. Currently, he is the member of the International Executive Board for GE4 Network.

Among other portfolios he previously held was the Advisory Board of Swiss- ASEAN Learning and Teaching (SALT) Network, the Operational Board of the World Technological Universities Network (WTUN), Board Member of APAIE and the Chairman of Executive Committee for Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net). He has vast experience in managing and recruitment of international students, managing international mobility for students and in formulating internationalisation policies and guidelines. He is a regular speaker in many national and international forums and conferences related to international education and globalisation of higher institutions. He also involved in many strategic talent management initiatives for UTM, especially for the capacity building for young administrators. He has received international recognitions including the Global Academic Excellence Awards 2017 by the Amity University and the World Education Congress Award 2018 (for Education Leadership), India.

Workshop II

“Establishing and sustaining partnerships”
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR DR MOHD ISMID MD SAID
PRO-VICE-CHANCELLOR (INTERNATIONAL)
UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA (UTM)

Dr. Mohd Ismid Md Said obtained his BSc (Marine Biology) in 1988, Master’s degree (Marine Biology) in 1990 and PhD (Marine Biology) in 1994 from Kagoshima University, Japan. He started his career at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as a Research Officer in 1993 before being appointed as a Lecturer in 1994.  He was appointed as the Head of Environmental Engineering Laboratory from 1994 to 2000 and later as Head of Environmental Engineering Department from 2000 to 2003.

In 2009, Dr. Mohd Ismid was appointed as Regional Manager (Japan) at the Office of International Affairs, and later as Director of International Students from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, he was appointed as the Director of Global Strategy and Engagement at the UTM International (UTM-i). In July 2019, Dr. Mohd Ismid was further appointed as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International). As Pro-Vice-Chancellor in-charge of international matters and also as a member of the University’s Executive Team, his main responsibility is to provide leadership in achieving UTM’s strategic goals in regard to internationalisation and for the continuing strategic development of international activities and engagement on behalf of the university.

Aside from his duties as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mohd Ismid is also a member of Impact and Restoration of Water Bodies Research Group and specialised in the field of water quality management and biological assessment of water bodies.

Workshop III

“Mobility for staff and students”
PROF DR NOR HANIZA SARMIN
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR (GLOBAL STRATEGY AND ENGAGEMENT),  UTM INTERNATIONAL
UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA (UTM)Dr Nor Haniza Sarmin is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor Bahru, Johor. She joined UTM as a lecturer in May 1991.

Prof Niza received her BSc (Hons), Master and PhD in Mathematics from Binghamton University, New York, USA. She was holding the position of the Head of Postgraduate Department in Faculty of Science from 2007-2012, the Deputy Dean in the School of Graduate Studies UTM from 2012-2016, the Director (Global Education and Student Experience) in UTM International from April 2016 – 31 March 2018 and later the Associate Director (Student Services and Global Education Experience) from 1 April 2018 – 14 August 2019. Now she is holding the post of the Associate Director (Global Strategy and Engagement) starting from 15 August 2019.

Prof Niza has a vast experience in the internationalization area. In the School of Graduate Studies, she was handling the recruitment of international students for postgraduate studies, managing the Postgraduate Students Society, Customer Relation and Postgraduate Program Development. In UTM International, she was responsible for the mobility of students (inbound and outbound) and also international students’ activities. For her recent portfolio, Prof Niza manages international relations which include visits, staff mobility and agreements; international alliances, and strategic planning for the ranking exercise.
